ANTISEL participates in GRAPE_ANTHO: Research and innovation for the valorization of winery by-products

About GRAPE_ANTHO: ANTISEL S.A. participates in the research and innovation project “Utilization of anthocyanin extracts from vinification waste”, with the project code KMP6-0079465.

The project is implemented under the Action “Investment Plans of Innovation” of the Programme Central Macedonia, PARD 2021–2027, co-funded by the European Union and Greece.

It focuses on the utilization of winery by-products, especially pomace, as raw material for the extraction and further processing of naturally occurring bioactive substances, with emphasis on anthocyanins.

Through this initiative, ANTISEL supports a collaborative research effort that connects scientific innovation, laboratory expertise, and circular economy principles.

From vinification waste to bioactive substances

Wineries represent an important sector of industry in Greece, while their operation generates significant quantities of by-products, including bunches, pomace, grape seeds, and wine lees.

Pomace, the main solid winery by-product, contains a high burden of polyphenols, mainly anthocyanins. These compounds are secondary plant metabolites with well-documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties.

The project explores how these valuable natural compounds can be recovered and further processed, transforming vinification waste into a potential source of added-value products.

A research direction with scientific and environmental value

Anthocyanins are of particular scientific interest due to their biological properties and their potential use in the development of novel products aiming at the prevention and/or delayed progression of neurodegenerative disorders.

GRAPE_ANTHO is aligned with current research directions related to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, two molecular processes involved in the development and progression of neurodegenerative disorders.

At the same time, the initiative follows the principles of circular economy by focusing on environmentally friendly approaches and generally recognized as safe materials for the extraction of anthocyanin-rich fractions.

Circular economy in practice

The valorization of winery by-products creates an opportunity to reduce the environmental footprint of wineries while supporting the development of new products with scientific, economic, and commercial potential.

In this context, GRAPE_ANTHO demonstrates how agro-industrial by-products can be reintroduced into the value chain through research, technology, and applied laboratory processes.

This approach highlights the importance of connecting environmental responsibility with innovation, especially in sectors where waste streams can become sources of bioactive compounds.
